South Carolina High Point Hike
Highpoint 35. South Carolina, Sassafras Mountain, 3560 ft, 10/11/03
Used Wingers' book for guidance. Zumwalt's book has a pretty area good road map, showing nearby peaks.
The orange survey marker post still stands in 2003, but it has a large vertical crack. The benchmark is at the base of the post and is set in a round concrete cylinder. This location is not the precise highpoint. It is obvious that there is higher ground in a WNW direction. Also, there is a bulletin board and registration box about 200 feet in that direction.
There are no rest rooms at the summit or the trail head.
